Los Angeles has its origins back in the 18th century, when – in 1781 – Filipe de Neve established the first ever, permanent Spanish settlement known as ‘El Pueblo de Nuestra La Reina de Los Angeles’, or ‘The Los Angeles Plain’.
De Neve, under orders from the King of Spain grew the settlement bringing with him a group of 12 families, 46 persons in total. While Los Angeles and indeed California remained under Spanish rule, Mexico would eventually gain jurisdiction in 1822. In 1848 California was officially made a U.S. territory under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
