The Top Ten Things To Experience In The City Of Los Angeles

Not just the entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles is an experience in its own right. If it feels like you’re walking onto a movie set in LA, then it’s probably because you are; as street corners, diners, landmarks and restaurants have all played parts in countless big screen releases. If it’s not enough that the City of Angels feel like a glamorous reality TV show at times, then remember that it is also a major international city for other industries too; from fashion and food to technology and medicine. In fact, as America’s second largest city and undoubtedly one of its most culturally diverse, a trip to Los Angeles can be whatever you want it to be. But to help you decide, here are ten of the best things to see and do.

Whether it’s your idea of fun or not, there’s no escaping the impact Disneyland has on Los Angeles. This is the original home of Disney and, as such, the ‘happiest place on earth’ moniker still lives strong. For families, there’s little more exciting and iconic than experiencing the magic of Disneyland, meeting the characters and visiting Cinderella’s fairytale castle.

Originally built for the sole purpose of making movies, today most of the big-name studios in LA offer guided tours, so you can see how the magic is made. However, the likes of Warner Bros and Universal have transformed their studios into fully-fledged theme parks, with rollercoasters, simulators, spooky encounters and everything else you could possibly imagine.

Not many street names resonate around the world quite as easily as Sunset Boulevard. Famous internationally as the street where would-be movie stars’ dreams could come true, ‘Sunset Strip’ runs all way from Downtown right to the ocean and traditionally linked the upscale movie-star mansions to their film studios in Hollywood. Hollywood Boulevard itself is also home to the famous Walk of Fame, where countless stars have imprinted their hands and messages in the sidewalk.

In this city, the beaches are where people come each day to see and be seen. Over the top, in your face and a superb people watching opportunity, Venice Beach is the most popular by far. There are plenty more iconic beaches around Los Angeles and Southern California to choose from though, from surfing at Santa Monica Beach and Pier to swimming in the lagoons of Malibu.

Spend a cheap day out in the ‘bleachers’ by taking in some sports when you’re in town. LA is a big sports city and it takes its events seriously, so there’s nothing like the thrill and excitement of watching the LA Lakers or Dodgers playing on their home turf.

Whether you enjoy seeing the famous Getty Museum and Griffith Park Observatory, or strolling down Rodeo Drive and buying lunch at The Grove, there are plenty of Los Angeles Hotels to choose from to make your stay as simple as possible.

A History Of Los Angeles

A combination of desert, cosmetic surgery and a love of the extreme have made Los Angeles into one of the most unique cities to visit in the United States, but where did it all begin?

Los Angeles has its origins back in the 18th century, when – in 1781 – Filipe de Neve established the first ever, permanent Spanish settlement known as ‘El Pueblo de Nuestra La Reina de Los Angeles’, or ‘The Los Angeles Plain’.

De Neve, under orders from the King of Spain grew the settlement bringing with him a group of 12 families, 46 persons in total. Gradually, as the settlement grew, it eventually spawned into a city, becoming known as ‘La Ciudad de Los Angeles’, the city of Angels or simply Los Angeles as it is known today.

While Los Angeles and indeed California remained under Spanish rule, Mexico would eventually gain jurisdiction in 1822. California remained under Mexican jurisdiction for the best part of two decades until 1846 when – after two years of fighting – the area came under the control of the United States. In 1848 California was officially made a U.S. territory under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

Los Angeles was established as a county in 1850, one of the original 27 taking its name from the thriving community that was then known as ‘Los Angeles’. After this, the people of Los Angeles formed a self-government, electing a three man court of sessions to act as the first governing body.

In more recent years, Los Angeles has become known for movies, entertainment and busy freeways. The first movie makers began to arrive in Los Angeles in the first few decades of the 20th century. Los Angeles with its almost year round sunny weather provided the perfect setting for filming.

The movie industry grew quickly, for the most part surviving the Great Depression and producing 750 feature films in the 30s. However it wouldn’t be long before another challenger would appear, the home television set. By the 1950s against the popularity of the TV, film production had fallen to well below 300 films per year. However Hollywood fought back and brought the thriving TV industry to Los Angeles.

Today the entertainment industry is thriving, both in film and television as well as a growing number of other thriving sectors including the adult entertainment industry, which the city has become famous for. With these thriving industries a growing number of Los Angeles hotels, restaurants and other amenities have sprung up, making it a popular destination for tourists and a must see city on a trip to America.

Enjoy a Star-Studded Holiday in Los Angeles

As a city that’s commonly associated with fame and glamour, Los Angeles has long been drawing tourists from all over the world to experience its star-studded offerings. From iconic Hollywood sights to the famed film stars themselves, there’s no better place to travel for a glimpse into the world of fame and fortune.

Los Angeles is scattered with hints of movie-making magic – but Hollywood is jam packed with it. So it makes sense that Hollywood, often referred to as Tinseltown, is where hopeful star-spotters tend to go. At the top of many people’s to-do list is usually Hollywood Boulevard, which has gained its fame over the years through countless movies, songs and, of course, its name. However, while Hollywood Boulevard is full of film related attractions, it’s not a common haunting ground for the stars. You will, however, be able to measure your hands and feet against actual prints of movie stars at Grauman’s Chinese theatre. Afterwards, head to the Hollywood and Highland Center, where you can marvel at the Kodak Theatre – home to the annual Academy Awards ceremonies. Finish off your tour of Hollywood Boulevard with a stroll along the Walk of Fame and a peek into the Boulevard’s countless souvenir shops – where you can source all the wonderfully cheesy T-shirts and Hollywood postcards that you could ever hope for.

Of course, no visit to Hollywood is complete without a visit to the Hollywood sign. You can see the sign up close either by driving or hiking to it – and it really is as marvellous as you imagined. Take photos of it and with it – just don’t leave Los Angeles without first seeing it.

If you’re interested in both stargazing and the magical processes of movie-making, a Hollywood studio tour might be perfect for you. From Paramount to Warner Brothers Studios, you can get a behind-the-scenes look at how it’s all done. You might even get to see a movie being filmed during your visit, which means the movie stars won’t be very far.

However, there is a way to get even closer to the stars – and that’s by frequenting their favourite hangouts. From restaurants like The Ivy and hiking trails like Runyon Canyon to shopping districts like Rodeo Drive, there are many ways to increase your chances of rubbing elbows with the stars. LA’s countless clubs and chic bars offer even more opportunities – simply research the trendiest venues at your time of travel to scope out the stars that come out at night. Stay in Los Angeles hotels near some of Hollywood’s hottest districts, and you’ll further increase your chances of seeing a star.

Finally, if you haven’t satisfied your want of stargazing, purchase a star map – usually available along the residential regions of Sunset Boulevard – and seek out your favourite stars’ homes. You never know – you might just catch a glimpse of your favourite actor or actress wandering the neighbourhood. Ultimately, however, even if you don’t end up spotting a star, you’ll still end up with a quintessential tour of LA’s most famous sights – which means your holiday in Los Angeles is bound to yield a star studded experience.
