It was something like a who’s who list as stars and scouts mingled at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel in Century City in Los Angeles. The event was the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation’s In the Spirit of Game sports extravaganza.
Dennis Gilbert, White Sox executive, organized the evening and also answered phones. Woes of the economy didn’t seem to permeate the atmosphere as all of the tables were filled in this fundraising initiative designed to help baseball scouts in need.
Attendees enjoyed entertainment, baseball memories and opportunities to buy sports and entertainment memorabilia at both silent and live auctions that we held at the event. All 30 of the Major League baseball organizations help in any way they can. Hosted by Ron Dibble and well-known actors Brendan Fraser and Don Johnson, the atmosphere was warm, congenial and appreciative towards the scouts, who were, for this one night, on front and center for their work and love of the game.
During the evening, the foundation presented honors to Goose Gossage, John Harrington, Whitey Herzog, the Alou family and George Brett. “Dennis gave me an award tonight and I told him you don’t have to give me an award because I’m coming back every year because it’s a great event,” said Hall of Famer Brett.
Jerry Reinsdorf believes the event has become bigger than he ever could have imagined. Reinsdorf’s organization has continued to be one of the foundation’s biggest supporters. “These people need help more than anybody else.”
Those in attendance consider Dennis Gilbert’s efforts noteworthy. Gilbert works to get support of the entire baseball community for what is a very worthy cause. “Scouts are a part of baseball history and are undercompensated, underappreciated and this helps make up for it a little bit,” Gilbert said.
With the Hyatt’s excellent cuisine and plenty of ambience to go around, there was little question about whether attendees enjoy the event and the likelihood of returning again next year. Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig was in attendance for the third consecutive year. “This is a wonderful testimonial and honor to people who give their lives to baseball and are the life blood of baseball.”
Gilbert attributes the success to the support he receives. “We have so much support, so much great momentum,” Gilbert said, “We just have great people around us and a great board of directors. You can’t lose with those people.”
With another successful year of the event under his belt, we suspect that Gilbert will only delight with the success of this year’s event for a moment before he’s off planning next year’s event. Event planners understand that these things don’t just happen. They take effort and initiative and if anyone knows that, Gilbert does.
As items were auctioned and donations were made, it was clear that the love of baseball is still very much alive and well. Stars and scouts along with some of the industries movers and shakers made the event a huge success.

While on a trip to Los Angeles (LA), it becomes obvious that there are an extensive amount of sights and places to see. Because Los Angeles is so large, your first consideration should be transportation, including rental cars, taxis, buses, subways, and even helicopters. Because LA is so widespread, and not merely concentrated in one central area, you need to plan your travels based upon the sites and places that are most important for you to experience. Then, you must determine what steps you should take, while taking into consideration the effort that will likely be expended to get to those places. The number one factor will be traffic. LA is well known for its traffic jams and it is best to limit the amount of driving you do, especially during rush hour periods.
One good way to travel throughout Los Angeles, without having to drive yourself, is to take a tour around LA. There are numerous tour companies and most can be found on the internet or in travel magazines. A bus or private van tour of LA could be good for those who do not consider themselves to be good drivers. In addition, a tour ride in a van will allow you to relax and take pictures while someone else drives. Furthermore, the tour driver will not only be able to take you to many of the spots and sights you will want to see, but will be able to narrate and provide interesting facts as well. For some of you however, sitting in a van that is driving around in traffic is not an exciting way to spend your trip. If this applies to you, then you may want to consider an aerial tour of Los Angeles in a helicopter.
A helicopter tour over Los Angeles will allow you to see most of LA in a very short period of time. A Los Angeles helicopter tour is sure to provide an exciting time and memorable experience of your trip. While avoiding traffic, your helicopter flight may take you over downtown LA, Santa Monica, Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Sign, the beach, amusement parks, stadiums, and star’s homes. A good helicopter tour pilot will show you points of interest and fly the helicopter in order to allow you to take the best possible pictures. It is generally recommended that you take an la helicopter tour only when the weather is nice, otherwise the visability could be disappointing. Fortunately, Los Angeles has very good weather most of the time.
Some other ground-based tours which you may want to consider would include movie star’s homes in Beverly Hills, shopping malls, Rodeo Drive, museums including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Getty Center, Petersen Automotive Museum, and the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum. Also be sure to see amusement parks, such as Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knott’s Berry Farm, Disney California Adventure, and Six Flags Magic Mountain. In Santa Monica you can check out the world famous Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade, and then head over to Venice beach. If you enjoy flowers and the outdoors, then the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Descansco Gardens are beautiful places to take a walking tour. Dodger stadium tours in Elysian Park are also a popular stop. This behind the scene tour of the stadium lets fans visit restricted areas and view the ballpark from a different perspective. Also of interest is the Griffith Observatory, which has been a major Los Angeles landmark since 1936. From the observatory, there is a stunning view of the Los Angeles basin below, especially at night. Finally, a stop at the La Brea Tarpits will feature real observation pits and life size replicas of some extinct mammals and dinosaurs, and is landscaped to include many species of Ice Age plants.
Los Angeles is also call L A and is the largest city in the state of California. It has hosted the Olympic Games twice once in 1932 and once again in 1984.
There are numerous shopping areas in the Los Angeles area that are distinctly ethnic and that also should not be missed, such as Little India, Chinatown, Olviera Street, and Japan town. The so called Golden Triangle holds more wealth and fine stores than most small countries. At its centre is the renowned Rodeo Drive. It is the street on which Julia Roberts had her shopping spree in Pretty Woman. It is the street that sports designer stores such as Tiffanys, Cartier, Chanel, Bally, Gucci and other well-heeled notables. This is also the street that few people who do not spend their life in front of the camera can afford. On nearby Wilshire Blvd, there is the Regent Beverly Wilshire, Niketown, Barneys, and, yes, the Winona Saks Fifth Avenue. And throughout the Triangle, you will see a curious collection of nouveau riche types sauntering about that will make you feel like you are watching an episode of Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous.
This city offers one of the most diverse arrays of bars and clubs. LA is one of the busiest cities where one slaves away all day working the 9 to 5 shift and then whisks away the nights and weekends in its vast nightlife scene. As soon as the sun begins to go down in Los Angeles people begin crossing the streets of Hollywood with their instruments as they set up for the next gig. The bright lights overwhelm the city and the night has just begun. In this city that never sleeps with it is blinding lights there are a plentyfull of bars and clubs up and down the streets of Hollywood, martini bars in Westwood, rooftop lounges in the Valley and sports bars in Sanata Monica and all the beach cities. There is something for every ones taste.
Today LA boasts attractions like the famous Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame, which honours those who have made a difference in film, music and stage. Walking and sight seeing tours are a great way to see and experience Hollywood. Everything is located near the Graumans Chinese Theatre where film and music enthusiasts can place their hands in the handprints and shoeprints of their favourite celebrities. Guided bus tours also of Hollywood offer an outside glimpse of the homes of the famous and rich.
Some of the best concerts in music history have been played at the Hollywood Bowl, another major Los Angeles attraction. This huge historical venue has been the playing stage for huge acts such as Frank Sinatra and The Beatles.
